“Traditional proportions and detailing are used throughout, and there is a relaxed elegance that is definitely derived from the setting—the way the house captures the vistas, courtyard views, and gardens.”

—Richard Beard, quoted by

PENINSULA RESIDENCE
San Francisco Peninsula, CA

Layered by design, this house—located in the verdant suburbs south of San Francisco—unfolds through a series of thresholds, shifting from formal to informal, public to private, as one moves into and through the house. Classical forms and proportions are the foundation of the contemporary composition of stone-clad, linked structures and walls, which weave the home into a system of courtyards and terraces, integrating the architecture into an always changing interplay of light and gardens. This landscape is developed as an architectural complement, defining outdoor rooms as much as the interior of the house defines interior space.
